Stem-Cell Therapy

Supporting Healing.

Restoring Function.

Regenerative treatment focused on supporting tissue repair, reducing symptoms and helping patients preserve joint function and mobility.

What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are cells that have the ability to differentiate into other cell types in the body and renew themselves. They essentially act as a source of new cells.

Stem cells are broadly divided into embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Adult stem cells are involved in tissue repair and have the ability to contribute to the renewal of adult tissues.

How Are Stem Cells Obtained?

Stem cell sources include adipose tissue, bone marrow, blood, and umbilical cord tissue. In practice, bone marrow is one of the most commonly used sources.

The pelvic bone is a rich source of stem cells. In clinical practice, stem cells can be obtained from the pelvic bone using a needle and then separated through filtration and centrifugation. This separation process takes approximately 20–30 minutes.

How Is Stem Cell Treatment Performed?

Once the stem cells have been obtained from the bone marrow and prepared, they are injected into the damaged area where tissue healing is desired.

When treating knee cartilage damage, if the aim is to keep the stem cells localized to the damaged area rather than allowing them to disperse throughout the knee joint, collagen- or hyaluronic acid-based carriers may be used to provide a targeted effect.

Because the stem cells are obtained from the patient’s own body, the aim of the treatment is to support the tissue’s natural healing and regeneration process.

The procedure is performed under anesthesia to ensure that the patient does not experience pain.

What Are the Results of Stem Cell Treatment?

Research on stem cell therapy is relatively recent. In particular, for patients with cartilage damage who are not suitable candidates for implant surgery, the treatment aims to support the natural healing of cartilage tissue.

Early results from studies involving a limited number of patients have demonstrated approximately an 80% success rate.

However, appropriate patient selection and obtaining and preparing stem cells using an appropriate technique are important factors that can influence treatment success.

What Are the Risks of Stem Cell Treatment?

Stem cell therapy is a relatively new treatment, and the number of studies on the subject remains limited.

Although it may be considered particularly for damage to tissues with limited regenerative capacity, such as cartilage, the aim is for the administered stem cells to contribute to the formation of cartilage tissue.

However, in some cases, stem cells may develop into bone or proliferate excessively, forming thickened tissue that may cause discomfort.

For this reason, careful follow-up after treatment and appropriate patient information are essential.
